Father Jacques Marquette, 17th C.

French Jesuit Jacques Marquette (1637 - 1675), able to speak six of the "Indian" languages, was a missionary and explorer who accompanied Louis Joliet on the 1673 expedition commissioned by the French King. They explored the Great Lakes area reaching the Mississippi, thus opening the area to French fur trading and settlement.
